The Key Observatory was built in the area where the Key Unit (5th Infantry Division of the Army) in the Army could see the North at a glance on April 11, 1998 to provide security training in the region and comfort the sorrows of those unable to return home. The Key Observatory is a representative security tourism course that reminds the postwar generation, who is prone to become insensitive to security, of the importance of liberty and peace and comfort the sorrows of the displaced for being unable to return home. At the observatory, visitors can see the barbed wire fence of the DMZ and GPs, front-line guard posts, at a glance, while the exhibition room inside displays household goods from North Korea and combat equipment used against the South, offering a glimpse into the life in the North. The exhibition room is equipped with a postcard tree of desires for unification, which is shaped like barbed wire, offering more entertainment to the visitors.
